PEESA III Project Kick-off Meeting 15-18 November 2017, Pretoria, South Africa

The PEESA III Kick-Off meeting was held on the 15-18 November 2017 at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria, South Africa. The kick-off meeting was attended by representatives of HSW, HSFL, USZ, CPUT, DUT, TUT and VUT. No members of LBUS could attend the kick-off meeting due to the visa issues. The meeting was organised and hosted by TUT. All the PEESA III role players were introduced to the project and its expected outcomes. In the beginning of the meeting the PEESA III project board (PB) was formed. In addition, person in charge for financial matters (FPC) was appointed from each university. Each FPC is responsible for the own institution’s financial reporting to the project coordinator. After a short presentation of the work packages, the responsibilities of partners were fixed in an action plan for the first period. In addition, the project budget was introduced to the partners by headings and attention was paid on the eligibility of costs. During the kick-off meeting the partners have agreed upon such communication tools as e-mails and PEESA III website. 

Working groups entitled “Team A” (HSW, USZ, CPUT and DUT) and “Team B” (HSFL, LBUS, TUT and VUT) were formed. The Working Groups outlined the strategy of their joint working as well as the plan for the next meeting to be organised at CPUT in Cape Town, 22-26 January 2018. Further on, organisation of the next meeting at CPUT in Cape Town, 22-26 January 2018 was discussed in detail. At the end of the day, the partners have agreed on the dates for the next project meetings.

Later, the PEESA III Kick-off Meeting participants were involved in discussions on inter-connections between university, enterprise and regional government for engineering education sustainability.

Meeting Objectives were to:

-enquire information about the cooperation between local government, universities and business as to provide policies towards local development

-enquire information about triple helix model 

-enquire information about local challenges in ensuring effective employment in the region

Meeting Course:

-Brief presentation about policies on local people development and capacity. City of Tswane has developed balancing policies towards building training and corporate communities and launched learning and development founds.

-Discussion on policies towards effective employment 

Meeting Outcomes:

-Guidelines for curricula (PEESA I given as an example), distance education (PEESA II) and didactic/ staff exchange (PEESA III)

-Recommendations for developing flexible learning paths like work-balanced learning as a good policy towards ensuring gender balance 

Finally, there was an industrial visit organised by TUT to the company ABB, Longmeadow, Modderfontein, Republic of South Africa.

Meeting Objectives were to

-enquire information about the cooperation between local government, universities and business as to provide policies towards local development

-enquire information about corporate projects and policies on training programs

Meeting Course:

-video presentation from ABB CEO

-presentation on ABB: safety policies, talent programs, power macro and micro grids  

-corporate Visit

-lively discussion on youth talents programs underlying the importance of 70-20-10 rule (lessons learned by successful and effective workers are: 70% from challenging assignments, 20% from developmental relationships, 10% from coursework and training)

-discussion on gender balanced policies in ABB

-discussion on the impact of 4.0 revolution on talent programs and cooperation between universities and companies

Meeting Outcomes:

-participants enquired information on youth talents programs underlying the 70-20-10 rule which can be effective in implementing course programs 

-information on women participation and work-balanced policies will be distributed among participants    

PEESA III Project Meeting 22-25 January 2018, Cape Town, South Africa

The PEESA III Meeting Nr. 2 was held on the 22-25 January 2018 at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Cape Town, South Africa. The Meeting organised and hosted by CPUT was attended by representatives of HSW, HSFL, USZ, LBUS, ASIIN, CPUT, DUT, TUT and VUT. 

During 22-23 January 2018, Closing Conference “Capacity building for sustainable development” of the Programme on Energy Efficiency in Southern Africa (PEESA II) in conjunction with PEESA I and PEESA III (both co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union) was hosted at South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) Bellville Campus CPUT. The Closing Conference enabled PEESA III project participants to present the project outcomes and deliverables and provide a forum to discuss the challenges in engineering education especially in the field of energy, confronting the Southern African region. In the Closing Conference programme a number of messages were addressed by

-Minister of Economic Development, Western Cape Government

Such topics were presented as

-PEESA I, PEESA II and PEESA III by a representative from Hochschule Wismar

-European Accreditation Standards by Accreditation Agency for Study Programs in Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences and Mathematics (ASIIN)

-Erasmus + DAMOC: Smart Grids project.

The messages facilitated the discussion on the involvement of local government and university-enterprise co-operation in order to satisfy the needs in engineering education especially in the field of energy.

At the end of the Closing Conference, a tour of South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) was organised for PEESA III participants. The South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) is the first national renewable energy technology centre in South Africa and has been established at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) - Bellville campus, Cape Town, South Africa. SARETEC expedites specialized industry-related and accredited training for the entire renewable energy (RE) industry including short courses and workshops. SARETEC has established strong partnerships with government, academia, industry, associations and private sector companies within the Renewable Energy Sector. The facility is a green building and is designed to showcase the use of renewable energy and energy efficient technology.

During the PEESA III project board (PB) meeting after a detailed discussion of the work packages, the responsibilities of partners were fixed in an action plan. In addition, the project budget was introduced to the partners by headings and attention was paid on the eligibility of costs. Financial documentation was discussed in detail. Reporting to the PEESA III coordinator and related deadlines were revealed. PEESA III logo was approved by the PEESA III Project Board (PB) members. 

PEESA III Project partners from CPUT, DUT, TUT and VUT made presentations about the situation of gender equality at their universities, faculties and departments. The issue of measurement tools and instruments was identified. The PEESA III Project Meeting participants concluded that further efforts for attracting more females staff members and students to engineering programmes should be put into activities aimed at gender equality in engineering field. 

Working groups entitled “Team A” (HSW, USZ, ASIIN, CPUT and DUT) and “Team B” (HSFL, LBUS, TUT and VUT) discussed and reported on the progress in the development of Master programmes. The Working Groups outlined the plan for the next meeting to be organised at HSFL (Germany) in Flensburg, 18-21 June 2018. Further on, programme for the next meeting at HSFL in Flensburg 18-21 June 2018 was outlined. Short introduction to PEESA III Meeting in Szczecin on 15-18 October 2018 was given. At the end of the day, the partners took into consideration the proposed dates for the project meeting at DUT in Durban in January 2019.

On 25th January 2018, the PEESA III Meeting participants visited the solar installation at the “Spier” Wine Estate. The staff of the “Spier” Wine Estate demonstrated the solar installation as well as told about its necessity, working principles, and local weather conditions for its maintenance as well as other issues such as staff employment and training. 

Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) Capacity Building for Higher Education Project Representatives Meeting 29-30 January 2018, Brussels, Belgium 

The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) Capacity Building for Higher Education Project Representatives Meeting took place on the 29-30 January 2018, Brussels, Belgium. It was the first Project Representatives Meeting for the PEESA III project participants. The project was represented by the project coordinator from HSW and a Vice-Chancellor from CPUT. CPUT is the coordinator for the African partners. The conference was a good opportunity to introduce the PEESA III project among the other ERASMUS+ project managers and to exchange experience with other projects. 

During the meeting, projects’ selection results were explained. Contractual management of the grant, Project’s impact, dissemination, exploitation and sustainability issues, financial and reporting rules as well as project management were disclosed.

The Meeting offered a discussion session on some emerging issues for the ACP countries like the role of ICT in education and joint curricula development and accreditation in the ACP HEIs. The second day was planned for networking activities. It was also useful to share project experiences with other coordinators and to learn from their practices. The outcomes of the Meeting will be reported to the PEESA III partners during the Project Board meeting between the 18 and 21 June 2018 in Flensburg, Germany.

HSW (Germany) and CPV visit to University of Szczecin, 31 January 2018

On 31st January 2018 PEESA III coordinator from Hochschule Wismar (HSW) and a Vice-Chancellor from CPUT visited University of Szczecin (USZ), Poland. University of Szczecin was represented by PEESA III Board member from USZ and Dean of Faculty of Economics and Management at University of Szczecin (USZ), Poland. The aim of the visit was to deepen the PEESA III co-operation between HSw, UST and CPUT and to sign a Letter of Intent between Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), South Africa, and Faculty of Economics and Management of University of Szczecin, Poland. The Letter of Intent was successfully signed by Dean of Faculty of Economics and Management at University of Szczecin (Poland) and a Vice-Chancellor at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), South Africa. The Letter of Intent promotes inetrnational co-operation and understanding as well as fosters institutional development. The Letter of Intent reveals such areas of mutual co-opration as

- curriculum development

- faculty staff and student exchange

- research and material exchange.

CBHE Project Coordinators' Conference in Bonn, Germany, 24-25 April 2018

On April 24-25 2018, DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service/Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) hosted the conference for the German coordinators of Erasmus+ Programme KA2 – Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices – Capacity Building in Higher Education Projects in Bonn, Germany. PEESA III was represented by PEESA III Coordinator from HSW. All together 20 coordinators from the whole Germany took part in the conference. The coordinators made a short presentation of the project. Administrative and financial issues as well as strengthening the project consortium in the coordinated projects were discussed.
